ARTIST FEATURE: Ryan Streeter

Ryan Streeter, music director, producer, and killer guitarist (yes, he can play the guitar behind his head), has an impressive career spanning major label artists, social media influencers, and independent musicians. His versatility makes him a one-stop shop for all your musical needs, recording and producing professional tracks with guitar, bass, drums, synths—you name it, Ryan can do it.

Can you tell me about your background in music and how you started creating original music?

RYAN: I grew up in a music family and started my professional music career when graduating from the Musicians Institute, where I studied guitar and independent artistry. This solid foundation allowed me to dive into the industry, working as a Music Director, Guitarist, and Playback Tech for a range of artists, from major label stars to independent musicians and social media influencers. Over the years, my skills in recording and producing music grew, leading me to create custom tracks tailored to fit the unique needs of various projects. This journey has helped me become a versatile musician and producer, capable of delivering high-quality music across different genres and styles.

How do you approach a new project or brief? What are your first steps?

RYAN: When starting a new project, my first priority is to fully understand the client’s vision. I begin with detailed discussions to gather all the necessary information about the desired mood, genre, and any specific ideas or inspirations they have. This initial conversation is crucial to ensure we’re on the same page. Next, I conduct research and listen to similar music to immerse myself in the style required for the project. Once I have a good grasp of the direction, I start brainstorming and sketching out initial musical ideas, making sure they align with the client’s expectations before moving forward with the composition.

Can you describe your typical creative process when composing custom music?

RYAN: My creative process starts with conceptualization. Once I understand the project's requirements, I lay down a basic structure or melody that captures the essence of the brief. I experiment with different instruments and sounds to find the right combination that brings the composition to life. Layer by layer, I build the track, paying close attention to the dynamics and emotional arc. Throughout this process, I continually review and refine each element to ensure it aligns with the client’s vision and enhances the overall theme. This approach allows me to create music that is both cohesive and impactful.

Can you give an example of a project where you had to create music in a genre you were less familiar with? How did you approach it?

RYAN: An example of a project that I was less familiar with was a few years ago when I first had to create sound effects (train noises, city noises, gun shots, thunder, rain, plates breaking, etc.) for a theatrical production. To tackle this project, I started by researching and listening to a wide range of sound effects used in similar productions. I studied the techniques used to create different sounds and experimented with various methods to replicate them. This involved some trial and error, using both natural recordings and digital tools to craft the desired effects. By immersing myself in the project and dedicating time to learning and experimentation, I was able to produce high-quality sound effects that met the production’s needs.

What is your process for collaborating with other artists or musicians when necessary?

RYAN: When collaborating with other artists, clear communication is key. I make sure we all understand the project’s goals and each person’s role from the start. I will send over a rough mix of the track for any feedback / approval before finalizing it. This collaborative approach not only enhances the quality of the final product but also fosters a creative and supportive working environment, allowing each artist to contribute their best work.

How do you ensure your music aligns with the client’s vision and the project's overall theme?

RYAN: To ensure my music aligns with the client’s vision, I prioritize continuous communication and feedback. From the initial brief to the final delivery, I keep an open dialogue with the client, and when needed, I will share drafts and seek their input at various stages. I provide detailed explanations of my creative choices and how they contribute to the project’s theme. This process allows for adjustments and refinements, ensuring the final composition perfectly matches the client’s expectations and enhances the overall project.

What do you consider your unique style or signature in your compositions?

RYAN: My unique style comes from my versatility and attention to detail. I blend elements from various genres, incorporating intricate melodies and rich harmonies to create a distinctive sound. My background in playing multiple instruments and using high-end gear allows me to produce tracks that are both polished and emotionally resonant. Whether it’s a high-energy rock track or soulful ballad, my compositions are characterized by their dynamic range, emotional depth, and a meticulous approach to production quality. This combination of technical skill and emotional expression sets my music apart and allows me to connect with a wide audience.
